According to the latest report of the Organic Cotton Exchange, global organic cotton production increased by 535% from 2005/06 to 2006/07. According to the Organic Cotton Exchange 2007 Organic Cotton Farm and Fiber Report, the output of organic cotton in 24 countries in 2007 reached 57,931 metric tons, or 265,517 bales. The production of organic cotton is based on an agricultural system that maintains and replenishes soil fertility without applying toxic and long-lasting pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The 10 largest organic cotton growing countries are (ranked according to the order): Turkey, India, China, Syria, Peru, the United States, Uganda, Tanzania, Israel and Pakistan. Almost 45% of organic cotton is grown in the Middle East (Turkey, Syria and Israel), while 32.9% of organic cotton is grown in Southeast Asia (India and Pakistan). LaRhea Pepper, CEO of Organic Cotton Exchange, said that the world's increasing production of organic cotton is directly attributable to the interest in the apparel, home textile and personal products industries turning to organic cotton. Organic Cotton Exchange believes that the demand for organic cotton fiber will remain strong, which means that more and more farmers will switch to organic cotton to help manufacturers meet market demand. According to three different growth projections, the output of organic cotton in 2007/08 may increase by 25-55%. Due to the popularity of organic cotton consumer products, the ending inventory of organic cotton is expected to be only 9,046 metric tons or 41,461 bales. The ending inventory may remain at or below the current level because of tight market supply. According to the 2006 Spring Global Organic Cotton Market Report by the Organic Cotton Exchange, global organic cotton product sales have increased by 35% annually, from US$245 million in 2001 to US$583 million in 2005, and are expected to grow rapidly to US$2.6 billion in 2008 . The five largest organic cotton users in 2005 were Nike (Oregon, USA), Coop (Switzerland) and Patagonia (California), Otto (Germany) and Sam’s Club/Walmart (Arkansas). The Organic Cotton Exchange will release the latest market analysis report in October 2007.
