Bangladesh's textile sector failed to meet export targets

The export performance figures of the Bangladesh Export Promotion Agency for the first five months of the current fiscal year (July-November 2007).   The export performance of knitwear, jute products, home textiles, leather, raw hemp, shoes and hats and fluff towels increased year-on-year, but they were still below the set export targets. The export performance of woven garments and textile fabrics declined year-on-year, and the export value was also lower than the export target.   The overall good performance of Bangladesh’s textile industry was driven by raw hemp. Raw hemp’s exports increased by 18.33%; textile fabrics showed the worst growth rate, with exports falling by 36.27% year-on-year.   The growth rate of knitwear reached 6.19%, the export growth rate of jute products reached 0.97%, the export growth rate of home textiles reached 8.28%, the export growth rate of leather reached 9.26%, and the export growth rate of fluffy towels reached 3.56%.  The negative growth in exports year-on-year was woven garments, which fell by 3.17%, and handicrafts fell by 8.47%.
