The Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Management Committee (BEPZA) Management Committee meeting was held yesterday. The meeting decided to establish two export processing zones in Feni and Munshiganj. This meeting was chaired by Chief Advisor Ahmed. The two export processing zones will have 500 acres of land to develop 600 leather industrial blocks. In the past few months, foreign investors from Japan, Malaysia, Canada, China, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore have returned because the government cannot provide them with industrial land. These countries hope to transfer their units to Bangladesh and establish new companies. Low labor wages have attracted international companies to obtain higher profits. These lands will be developed together with the private sector. The Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Pipe Network Management Committee plans to attract interested investors to develop infrastructure, such as electricity and water power facilities. Investors will build factories related to textiles, apparel, footwear and leather products, and power commodities. Currently, the eight export processing zones in Bangladesh are located in Dhaka, Chittagong, Mongla, Ishwardi, Commilla, Uttara, Adamjee and Karnaphuli. In the 2006-07 fiscal year, export processing zones contributed nearly 18% of Bangladesh’s total exports and employed more than 100,000 workers.
