The vice minister of Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce Pei Xuan District recently stated that Vietnam plans to reach 9.5 billion U.S. dollars in exports of the textile and apparel industry in 2008, an increase of about 22% over 2007. In order to expand the export of the textile and garment industry, Pei Chun District proposed that Vietnam should adjust the import tariffs on raw materials used in the production of textiles and garments in the country. At the same time, the industry and commerce department stepped up negotiations with relevant Japanese government departments to sign an agreement on tariff reduction as soon as possible. Reduce Japan’s import tariffs on Vietnamese clothing and textiles from the current 10% to zero. In the first 11 months of 2007, Vietnam's textile and apparel exports reached 7.1 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 32% year-on-year. It is estimated that the total export value this year will reach 7.5 billion U.S. dollars, which is much higher than last year's 5.8 billion U.S. dollars.
